The reference librarian is available in the Austrian, German and Swiss reading area on Mondays 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and on Thursdays 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; at other times, please contact the Humanities  Reading Room. In June, July and August, please contact the Humanities Reading Room.

The Austrian collection comprises more than 5 000 items, the German collection comprises more than 7 000 items and the Swiss collection comprises more than 3 000 items. These three collections contain books on language learning, history, social sciences and fiction, as well as films, music and a wide selection of journals. The Austrian reading area also offers information on the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Books (except reference books), films with the licence of the Goethe-Institut, music, audiobooks and journals (except the last issue) are available for homelending. Books can be borrowed for two weeks, journals for one week, films and music and audiobooks for three days.

The Austrian Reading Room was opened on 25 February 1991 on the initiative of Dr Henn-Jüri Uibopuu, Professor of the Salzburg University, when the Library was working in its previous premises at Toompea. The updated Reading Room was opened in the new building of the National Library in 1994 with the support of the Embassy of Austria in Helsinki.

The German Reading Room was opened in collaboration with the Embassy of Germany and the Goethe-Institut on 22 January 1996.

The Swiss Reading Room was opened at the National Library of Estonia in 1997 in collaboration with the Cultural Foundation Pro Helvetia and the Embassy of Switzerland in Helsinki.
