Pamphlets are defined as small in volume and content or of temporary importance information and marketing publications. These are invitations, calendars, placards and song pages, questionnaires, product and medicine catalogues, goods supply registers, exhibition and fair catalogues (except art and photo exhibition catalogues), curricula of single specialities and subject courses and study programmes that cover a shorter than one year period, telephone directories, publications promoting institutions/organisations, client leaflets, tourism and other folders, timetables; theatre, concert, sporting and cultural events playbills and programmes, crossword publications, election materials (except election coalitions’ programmes), publishers’ programmes (except annual programmes), reports of institutions/organisations that deal with their activities during a shorter than one year period of time.

The National Library acquires only those pamphlets that are considered national items. Preservation copies belong to the pamphlets’ archival collection the amount of which is over 229 000 copies. The basic part of these items was published after 1941. Earlier years are represented by churches hymns, programmes and introduction materials, theatre playbills and placards, election materials of the Riigikogu and local municipalities, advertising publications on different spheres of life; wall, table and pocket calendars, etc.

The preservation copies of pamphlets are described as thematic groups in the online catalogue ESTER and may be used in the Rare Books and Archives Reading Room.
