The National Library of Estonia building at Tõnismägi is one of the 20th century Estonian architecture landmarks. Its opening in 1993 was not just the opening of a library building but had a symbolic meaning for the entire nation. As of 1 November 2021, the National Library will close the doors of this iconic building for several years to undergo extensive renovation. Saturday, 30 October is the last day our reading rooms are open.
The whole day is packed with events and activities for the entire family: guided tours, video game tournaments, a concert and much more. When you come to the library, please present your COVID immunisation certificate or COVID recovery certificate.
And reading must go on!
We wish to be with our users also during the renovation period. Books are not going to disappear – just the opposite, new ones are coming out all the time. As of 2022, the headquarters of the library will open for our old and new friends at Narva mnt 11, on our temporary premises. Yet we wish to be even closer to you and have thus opened a branch at the Solaris Centre which will serve as the embassy of the National Library, representing us in the heart of modern life. The Solaris Centre has always aspired to be not just a shopping centre but also a cultural meeting point – and that is where we step in. In our embassy at Solaris you can read selected newspapers, magazines and books, ask for the advice of our information specialist, or use a computer. Come visit us and pass the time with books! All are very welcome!
